Humans have always been social creatures from time immemorial. Think about it, have you ever gone a week without having a social interaction with any one? If you have; then when is your second hearing- because you must be reading this in a solitary confinement from Alcatraz Island.

Social interaction is what erects the building block of any society. No one is an island, because you need people to survive and by exchanging ideas and interacting with one another, people design rules, institutions and systems within which they seek to live.

Seeing through the lens of hindsight, from the Stone Age to the fourth industry revolution, social interaction has evolved with some baby steps. However, one huge transformation that has affected the way humans interact is the advent of social media. Clearly, this technology has brought us closer together, by making the world a global village.

Knowing fully well that the needs of men are insatiable, with every technology comes the Kaizen philosophy — the need to continuously improve.

On Facebook’s recent second-quarter earnings call, co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined his vision to transition the social-media company to a ‘metaverse’ company, in what he called “one of the most exciting projects that we’re going to get to work on in our lifetime”. The metaverse converges Facebook’s major investments across augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), gaming, commerce and social networking into one virtual environment.

The Metaverse is an an embodied internet that you’re inside of rather than just looking at — it is fully experiential. The concept is that it will facilitate everything from social interactions to entertainment, shopping and work.

Clearly, you’re basically going to be able to do everything that you can on the internet today, as well as some things that don’t make sense on the internet today — like dancing. The defining quality of the metaverse is presence, which is this feeling that you’re really there with another person or in another place. Creation, avatars, and digital objects are going to be central to how we express ourselves, and this is going to lead to entirely new experiences and economic opportunities.
